How Do I Earn Points?

Any Lake Run Club member can earn points by volunteering in our club's many races and activities. The "Upcoming Races & Contact Information" web page lists all of the races our volunteers can participate in.

In addition, we have many programs and events throughout the year that will earn you points. Below is a detailed list of volunteer opportunities that will earn points and the points associated with each.

If you are in a Coordinator role, please be sure to contact Jill Schneider to report both your points and the points of any volunteers who assisted with your activity.

 

Note: Amount of points to be earned is listed. If you have questions regarding any of the volunteer positions, please contact any Volunteer Committee member.

Club President - 300
Chair monthly Club meetings, report on club activities through the newsletter, resolve issues, coordinate setting direction, and coordinate the board's activities.

Lake Run Director - 200
Coordinate all activities related to the Lake Run, held the first weekend in May at Lake Bloomington. Involves soliciting volunteers, working with sponsors, representing the event to the community, and being the point of contact for all race activities. Activities run throughout the year in preparation for the race.

Newsletter Editor - 200
Develop the monthly Club newsletter distributed to all members by mail. Involves receiving/editing articles from Club members, working with others to gather information on circuit points, area races, and area events, designing the layout, and distributing to members on a monthly basis. .

Catch The Wave Coordinator - 175
Coordinate all activities related to Catch the Wave. Catch the Wave is an annual, 10-week program for beginning runners to prepare them for the 7K race in the Lake Run in May. The program begins in February, and consists of weekly meetings with speakers followed by running in teams. Responsibilities include obtaining speakers, advertising the program, soliciting volunteers, forming teams, speaking to participants, taking care of pre-race activities for participants, and supporting volunteers/participants throughout the program.

Ride The Wave Coordinator - 175
Coordinate all activities related to Ride the Wave. Ride the Wave is an annual, 10-week program for experienced runners to prepare them for either the 7K or the 12K race in the Lake Run in May. The program begins in February, and consists of weekly meetings with speakers followed by running in teams. Responsibilities include obtaining speakers, advertising the program, soliciting volunteers, forming teams, speaking to participants, taking care of pre-race activities for participants, and supporting volunteers/participants throughout the program.

Circuit Point Master - 200
Gather information regarding members' participation in circuit races, track information in a spreadsheet, and report results to website coordinator and newsletter editors.

Kids Run Coordinator - 175
Coordinate all activities related to the Kids Runs for Fun. The Kids Run is a weekly program that runs from June to August held on Friday nights for children ages 12 and under. Responsibilities include advertising the program, soliciting volunteers, assigning responsibilities to volunteers, securing take-aways for the participants, etc.

Web Site (Overall) - 200
Gather and develop content for the Lake Run Club site. Publish content to the site, ensure information is up-to-date, and archive outdated information as appropriate.

Club Treasurer - 200
Track, monitor, and distribute funds for the Lake Run Club. Attend monthly board meetings and report on financials, develop annual report of funding.

Club Secretary - 150
Document board meeting discussions and decisions, and publish meeting notes/minutes on the forum and in the newsletter. Attend monthly board meetings.

Club Vice President - 150
Support club president in club activities. Attend monthly meetings, and assist in resolving issues as needed.

Membership Director - 200
Coordinate all activities related to Club membership. Includes reminders in the monthly newsletter and on the site regarding annual membership, receiving applications from new members, tracking membership via the newsletter, recommending changes/modifications to membership guidelines, and reporting on trends in membership at monthly board meetings.

Volunteer Coordinator - 200
Chair the volunteer committee, track volunteer activities, share information via the website and newsletter, promote volunteer opportunities, and represent the committee at monthly board meetings.

Volunteer Point Master - 200
Maintains volunteer points on database based on information received from race directors and volunteers coordinators. Chair the volunteer committee, track volunteer activities, share information via the website and newsletter, promote volunteer opportunities, and represent the committee at monthly board meetings.

Board Member - 125
Represent Club membership at monthly board meetings and provide direction/guidance for Club activities, changes, and issues.

Park to Park Race Director - 175
Coordinate all activities related to the Park to Park, held July 4th in Bloomington/Normal. Involves soliciting volunteers, working with sponsors, representing the event to the community, and being the point of contact for all race activities.

Dog Days Race Director - 175
Coordinate all activities related to Dog Days, a race held in July at Lake Bloomington. Involves soliciting volunteers, working with sponsors, representing the event to the community, and being the point of contact for all race activities.

Dawson Lake Race Director - 175
Coordinate all activities related to Dawson Lake, a race held in August at Dawson Lake. Involves soliciting volunteers, working with sponsors, representing the event to the community, and being the point of contact for all race activities.

St. Pat's Race Director - 175
Coordinate all activities related to the St. Patrick's Day race, held in downtown Bloomington. Involves soliciting volunteers, working with sponsors, representing the event to the community, and being the point of contact for all race activities.

Race Director Assistant – 50
Performs significant duties for Race Directors of sponsored races (St. Pats, Park 2 Park, Lake Run, Dawson, Dog Days) such as managing water stops, arranging for food and beverages, securing awards, etc.

Advertising/Billing Coordinator(Newsletter & Web site) - 200
Solicit sponsorship for newsletter, advertise area race information, work with the community to communicate information regarding club events, distribute advertising information to newsletter editor, web site coordinator, and area media as appropriate.

* Committee Member - 100
Serve on various committees for Club events. Examples include Volunteer Committee, Financial Committee, By-laws Committee, Committees for area races, etc. Each committee will decide responsibilities and frequency of meetings.

Marathon Training Coordinator - 175
Coordinate all activities related to the Marathon Training Program, a program to prepare runners for a fall marathon. The program begins in July in preparation for a marathon, and consists of weekly meetings with speakers and scheduled runs with participants. Responsibilities include advertising the program, speaking to participants, coordinating an occasional speaker, taking care of pre-race activities for participants, and supporting participants throughout the program.

Marathon Training Coach—50
Coach runners training for a fall marathon. Involves weekly long runs (usually on Saturday and Sunday) with participants and sometimes coaches are asked to help stage water and drinks at points along the trail. Program usually begins in June and ends in October.

Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator - 100
Coordinate activities related to the Adopt-a-Highway Program, a program to assist in picking up litter along a two mile stretch on the Lake Run course at Lake Bloomington. The Lake Run Club has committed to this activity 4 times per year.

Catch The Wave Team Leader - 50
Co-lead a team of beginning runners in the Catch the Wave Program, a 10-week program beginning in February to prepare runners for the Lake Run in May. Involves attending weekly Catch the Wave meetings and coaching participants on weekly runs following the meetings, as well as supporting participants throughout the program. Time commitment is once a week over the ten-week program, 2-3 hours each week, and participation at the Lake Run.

Ride The Wave Coach - 50
Co-lead a team of runners in the Ride the Wave Program, a 10-week program beginning in February to prepare runners for the Lake Run in May. Involves attending weekly Ride the Wave meetings and coaching participants on weekly runs following the meetings, as well as supporting participants throughout the program. Time commitment is once a week over the ten-week program, 2-3 hours each week, and participation at the Lake Run.

Kids Run Crew Member - 40
Assist with activities related to the weekly Kids Runs for Fun (June thru August on Friday nights). Crew members can serve in a variety of positions, including pre-event set-up, registration, tshirt distribution, treat distribution, directing runners, passing out ribbons/trophies, etc. Time commitment consists of a maximum of 2-3 hours each Friday night during the program. Coordinator is willing to accommodate those who cannot attend every session, but it's preferable to be there as much as possible.

* Course Measurement - 30
The course measurement person traverses the race course, accurately measuring the course distance and establishes/marks the starting and finish lines, as well as the mile points of the course. This is done using either the club's measuring wheel or attaching the Jones Course Measuring Device on a bicycle, calibrating the bicycle on one of the club's calibration courses and utilizing the calibrated bicycle to establish the course distance and critical points along a race course.

Web Site (Area Races) - 100
Serve as a point of contact for information related to area race results with member participation, and deliver information to newsletter editor and web site coordinator.

Web Site (Photo Album) - 100
Gather information from race photographers for publication on the site. Ensure information is up-to-date, and archive information when appropriate.

Finish Line Coordinator - 100
Gather a team of volunteers to run the finish line events for a race. Teams usually consist of 5-8 people, depending upon race size. Involves set up of finish line equipment, assigning positions at the finish line, monitoring activities during race, delivering results to software coordinators, and take down of equipment following the race. One coordinator needed per race. Finish line training available periodically, and detailed finish line procedures available -- contact a volunteer committee member for more information. Time commitment depends on the size of the race, but involves work prior to secure equipment and crew, and attendance about an hour before and up to an hour after a race.

Software Coordinator - 100
Run/monitor all activity related to race information and results, including entry of participant information, tracking accuracy of data, receiving and entering race results, and reporting race results. Software training available periodically, and detailed software procedures available -- contact a volunteer committee member for more information. One coordinator needed per race. Time commitment depends on the size of the race, but involves work prior to secure equipment and crew, and attendance about an hour before and up to an hour or two after a race.

Finish Line Crew - 20
Participate in finish line activities for a race. Crew members will serve in one of the following capacities: working the time machine as participants cross the finish line, directing runners through the finish line chute, gathering tags off of race bibs as runners enter the chute, and delivering race tags to the software crew. Also can include set-up and tear-down of equipment. Finish line training available periodically-- contact a volunteer committee member for more information. Crew members are assigned to tasks based on experience, and new volunteers are teamed up with experienced members. Time commitment requires crew to show up about 1/2 hour before the race, and stay for equipment take down following the race if needed.

Software Crew - 20
Participate in activities related to race information/results for a race. Crew members will serve in one of the following capacities: entering registration information into the Club computer, monitoring data entry for accuracy, receiving race tags and ensuring proper order of results, running the software, and posting the results. Crew members are assigned to tasks based on experience, and new volunteers are teamed up with experienced members. Software training available periodically, and detailed software procedures available -- contact a volunteer committee member for more information. Time commitment requires crew to show up shortly before the race (timing depends upon responsibilities), and staying till after race results are published.

* Race/Event Photographer - 15
Take photographs at a club-sponsored race, or other club-sponsored event, such as the Kids' Runs for Fun, or Catch the Wave. Deliver photographs to web site photo album coordinator for publication on the site, and to newsletter editors as appropriate. Time commitment varies depending upon the size of the race.

Adopt-A-Highway Crew - 25
Participate in Adopt-a-Highway Program, a program to assist in picking up litter along a two mile stretch on the Lake Run course at Lake Bloomington. The Lake Run Club has committed to this activity 4 times per year. Crew members can volunteer for one or more times to help.

* Newsletter Article - 10
Contribute an article to the monthly Club newsletter. The newsletter is distributed to all membership by mail. Articles are submitted to the newsletter editor.

The following positions earn points at Lake Run Club sponsored races only:

Race Registration Coordinator – 50 Registration Helper – 10
Manages race registration by putting a crew together to handle registration when needed, either on race day, or prior to race day. (For selected races). Involves receiving race registration forms and fees, ensuring appropriate information is entered on registration forms, and distributing race information, bibs and shirts.

Packet Pickup & Packet Stuffing (Sponsored races only - Lake Run, Park to Park, etc.) – 20
Distribute race packets prior to race day for selected races. Usually occurs a few days before the race at Often Running in Normal. Volunteers work in 1-2 hour shifts, usually with another volunteer.

Split Timer - 5
Stand at a mile marker at a race, and call out times as runner pass by. Time commitment consists of a half hour before the race to set up, till last runner passes.

Water Stop - 5
Fill water cups and distribute to runners at a water stop along the race route. Water stops are usually at 1.5 to 2 mile intervals along the route, and water stops are worked by multiple volunteers per stop. Time commitment consists of a half hour before the race to set up, till last runner passes.

Miscellaneous - 5
Various tasks throughout the year related to races, such as race packet stuffing, registering participants at Catch the Wave, distributing race packets at Catch the Wave, delivering flyers for the Lake Run, directing traffic, reporting on area race results for the newsletter, etc.
